Photoshop Tutorial: Safari Photo Effect
S Since we are going to make a perfume commercial, we will be working with a glamorous portrait photo. Here we are using a paid stock, hence we cannot offer a psd file for a download. A lot of people are not aware how to process photos using the infra red channel, even though it’s actually very easy. Your photo will turn black and white, but we will enhance one color at the cost of another, and this opens a very wide filed to creativity. So, if you do it on your own, go to Image >> Adjustments >> Channel Mixer and apply the following settings in the window that will pop out. This gives exactly the so-called “safari effect” that was so popular back in the 70′s light lipgloss and dark skin. Although the results may vary, depending on your base photo, it will be more or less the same if the initial picture is more or less in same shades as the one we are using. This is what we’ve got: We are not looking to get a natural photo, since we are designing a commercial poster, they are all well known for being over processed, over saturated and mostly way over airbrushed! Click on the tiny icon at the bottom of your Photoshop’s Layers Pallet, which looks like half black and half white pie (Create new filler adjustment layer). This will pop out a menu with different filler options, choose “Gradient map…” Use the following colors: #1c1c1c as your dark one, which loos almost like black, and Apply the gradient map. Next, we will be adding playful and cheery sun rays. This requires having some brushes in your arsenal, though we will be working withing something that came pre installed with Photoshop CS3 to make sure everyone who follows this tutorial will be able to reproduce our results. We are using a brush called “Rough Dry Brush”, though pick a bigger size than the default one, let’s go with at least 300px, depending on you photo size. Using the white color as your foreground, chaotically apply the brush all around the girl, without touching her face, see the photo below: After applying the dots, this is what you should get Don’t worry about the pixelated edges of the dots, we are just off to fix it! While the layer with dots is still selected, to to Filter >> Blur >> Gaussian Blur, and apply the settings you see below: Now, set the blending mode of this layer to “Overlay”, this will give a nice and very sweet look of sun coming through some hollowed surface. Duplicate the layer with sun rays and move it a bit, so you can go over the face. Press Ctrl + T, and right-mouse-click, to get the small sub menu, where you will choose the mode “Wrap”. Distort it as on the picture below, to get a more 3D effect of the rays spreading all over her face. Using the eraser tool, be sure to clean up any remains of the rays that fall “outside” the face area. Create a new layer, and using a very bright blue color #20b8d0, start adding eye shadows on top of the existing ones, or instead of any makeup you may have on the portrait. Set the layer’s blending mode to “Overlay” as well… After you finished working with the eyes area, using the same layer and color (it’s important, so you won’t create a salad of colors on your canvas) choose a smaller brush colorize the earnings, or the any other detail (a small detail) that you see on the photo. We chose to colorize the stones in the earnings, that gave enough balance and worked well together with eyeshadows. Again, we are not after a natural look on this tutorial, we are making an exaggerated commercial… and this is how they are made in Photoshop. Lastly, add a perfume bottle and text. you may play with blending options to get the text in the same hue as the other colors on your canvas. remember that balance and harmony is the key, even if we make something over-polished. This is your final result, and I hope you enjoyed the tutorial. Be sure to subscribe to our feed and like us on facebook.

Step 2. Applying Infra Red Filter
You can make the lips very pale, and the skin tanned (which is what we are going to do here), or we can make the skin pale, and the lips dark red. If you’d like to play more with Infra Red image processing, I suggest to download our Infra Red Photoshop Actions, it costs only $1 to buy and will allow you do image processing in one click.

Elegant Glass – Gorgeous Text Effect With PSD Download
Today we are going to create an extremely beautiful text effect that you will love, I guarantee. It will look good on both dark and light backgrounds (slightly better on the dark ones) and it will look equally impressive at any font size, though again, because of the perfectly thought-through details, big and curvy fonts will present this effect significantly better. So, let’s get started!

Important! When purchasing the PSD file, please click the “Return To Merchant’s Site” orange button once you made the payment, otherwise the download will not start automatically. If anything went wrong, just email me to the paypal address email. Font is not included in the download.
Step 1 - Create a new canvas of any size you wish, we used a relatively small one and filled it with dark blue #3b434f. Select a curvy and nice font that will be able to show beautifully all the details for this text effect. We used Renaissance font and went for a really big size!!

Step 2 – Go to Layer Styles and apply the following settings:

We set the shadow to black and reduced the opacity to almost half, this will look amazing on even bigger font size and grained or busy background.

Set the inner shadow to black and full opacity. The curve quality is called “chrome” and it is one of the default ones in most Photoshop versions.

Set the Outer Glow to Linear Dodge and use a crazy blue hue as we did – #00e4ff.

Pay attention to inner glow, using semi transparent white color and Linear Dodge effect as well, we are getting a very nice look…

Cove – Deep, this is the curve you will use for bevel effect, note that this text effect doesn’t look bevelled at all, yet the mild settings we use give it full depth and 3D feel.

We are using “Gaussian” countour for Satin settings, with mild and beautiful mauve hue.

Gradient overlay – #808080 to black, and then once again #808080 to white. Note that we are using “Reflected” style, but even any other will look great!

Almost invisible #003e73 dark blue 1 pixel stroke will add wholeness to this pixel perfect text effect.
That’s it, viola! The effect is ready. If you like the way it looks but can’t get the settings to work (though I encourage you to try, it’s very easy!), feel free to purchase my PSD file for $1 only, and the download is instalt, if you don’t forget to click the “return to merchant” orange button at the end of the payment. Scroll back up for details. Enjoy!

Designed Stylish Embossed Text with Metallic Glow
It’s been over 2 months since the last photoshop tutorial I had posted, but I have great news for you — I am back online with loads of new stuff to show you, so stay tune for all our upcoming tuts! Today, we will begin with this nice and beautiful text effect, and as most readers request, we also release the psd for download, for only $1. The PSD is for learning purposes only, you can incorporate it in a project for a client, but you cannot directly resell this very file. Enough talking, let’s get started.

Step 1. Preparing the Photoshop Canvas.
Create a new Photoshop file (Ctrl + N). We are using 600*400 size here but as always — yours could be a lot bigger if you need.

Using the Paint Bucket tool, fill the canvas with grey-blue dark color — #535559.
Step 2. Choosing the font.
I am personally a big fan of all the fonts that were used and popular back in the 50′s, so my all time favorite font will probably be “Bello”. it’s not free, but you can purchase it online. Please note that if you purchase the PSD file, the font will NOT be included, as we cannot distribute commercial fonts. So, if you have Bello font, select it and type your word in big letter, we used 188pt here.

Step 3. Adding Layer Styles.
Now, while your text layer is still selected, go to Layer >> Layer Styles, and apply the following settings…

Now the background texture. We will be using a pattern which we created ourselves, and if you purchase the psd file it will be included already in the style itself.

Lastly, we will add a 1px stroke, with gradient overlay, to give the text more depth.

This is what we have got so far, with all the layer styles applied correctly. If your result differs from what you see here, go back and check if all the settings for layer styles have been applied correctly, so far it’s only the technical part, so you should not have any problem.
Step 4. Adding Depth to the Canvas.
It’s the era of web 2.0 and having a flat canvas can ruin any effect, no matter how beautiful it is, so if we want our effect to pop, it has to have some depth. That’s why we will not get back to the base canvas (if it’s locked, simply double click it on the layers palette, and press OK to unlock). Go to Layer >> Layer Styles, and apply the following settings:

For the gradient, use the following colors:
1. #667c85 as the light blue
2. #475e68 as the dark blue
Here is what we have got so far…
Vibrant Metal Text Effect with Glowing Radiation Circles
This tutorial inspired by all the sci-fi movies where radiation glowing circles are pictured in great details; so we are going to make very vibrant, glossy and realistically curved text effect with extremely beautiful and original glow circles, that no other text effect has. We will be working with a lot of Contour settings, so this tutorial is for more advanced users.
So, let’s get started. Create a new canvas, we are using 600 x 370 pixels here.

Fill it with any background color and for best effect, fill it with background texture. Simply double click the background in Layers Panel, and Layer Style’s menu will pop up. Go to Pattern Overlay mode and fill with, preferably floral, pattern. Here we used Damask pattern which unfortunately isn’t available for a download by the author anymore, but you can get more free textures here.

When you are done, select the typing tool and type your word in the middle, with very big and gold letters. Should you decide to use a narrow or small font, the effect simple won’t be visible. We used the GEronto Bis font, 236 pt size, exactly as you see on the canvas below:

Now the magic will begin. Double click the layer with the letters, and start applying the layer styles as you see below. First, make a small shadow with Gaussian Contour.

Add inner shadow with dark gray hue (we used #4f4f4f) and for contour we available of another pre-installed curve called “Half Rounded”. If you are using Photoshop CS2 + version, you should find it among your default curves.

Add outer glow with a color that will complement your background, in our case we had blue damask texture as our background and chose the #3c447a blue hue as Outer Color.
For the Contour here, we used Ring – Double. This will also come pre-installed to your Photoshop. Please note that every setting in this tutorial makes use of different Contour curve, which makes our effect particular interesting and the effect stands out. This Double Ring is exactly what gives the nice radiation / explosion glowing rounds wrapping the text.

Inner glow with #ffffff white color, and once again Gaussian Contour.

Bevel and Emboss will give our text the depth it needs. Use the default Ring contour to get the best metallic / plastic look effect.

For contour, use the “Wow-sharp highlight” Contour element.

We also want to give more deep and extreme Satin effect but this time, since we found no contour that suited our needs, we created our own curve…

To get exactly the same results as we have here, please copy our mapping to your Contour Editor.

Finally add stroke to your text, with a lighter hue of blue that will complement your background. Please do not use white or black as these colors will look too contrasted with background.

This is what you have got so far:

white to transperant gradient
Finally, load a selection of for the upper part of the text . If you do not know how to do it, read on:
- Create a new layer on top of the text, and then hold down Ctrl and click on the layer in the layer’s panel, in order to select it.
- Using the Gradient Tool Now that goes from #ffffff to transparency.
- draw a gradient from the beginning of the selection on top, down to it’s bottom.
- Using the Elliptical Tool, draw a selection from the middle of the text to the bottom, and press Delete, to leave just the little gradient on top of the letters.
- This will do the gradually-glossy topping effect.

Done! Hope you enjoyed the tutorial and please feel free to download the PSD file of this effect, the file is of 600*370 size, same as you see here.
Design a 3D Newspaper Cropped Text Effect
When the older generation were young, and needed to create a school design or anything that involved cropping letters, we often cropped them first from an old newsprint, before proceeding to work with a colored paper. So this is pretty much what I wanted to create here — a newspapers cropped draft!
Let’s begin with making a new canvas and fill it with any solid color, our choice was #2b362b:

To give it a bit of depth, while the background is still selected, go to Layer Styles (Layer >> Layer Style >> Gradient Overlay) and apply the following settings.. This will give a lighter spot in the middle of the canvas that normally gives nice depth.

Now, find online or scan any newspaper pager. We couldn’t find one big sheet so we combined ours from a several ads in the local newspaper. Place the newspaper on the canvas.

Using a huge Cooper Black font, type your word on top of the newspapers layer. If you are using a different font, however, be sure to work with BOLD letters because the whole effect is based on the boldness of the typography.

Now it’s a little bit tricky for those of you who are still beginners, so please pay attention..
- While the typed letters are still selected, hold the CTRL key and press on the layer with the word “News” in the layers panel, this will load a selection around your letters.
- Go to Selection >> Modify >> Expand, and expand the selection by about 3-4 pixels. If your font is too narrow, you might want to use a bigger number.
- Press Shift + Ctrl + I, to reverse the selection.
- Press Delete.
You are now left with 2 layers, cropped from newspapers letters and the typed letters layer, which you can now delete. (or hide, but you certainly not going to need it anymore!).
This is what you have left:

Using the Lasso Marquee Tool, crop each letter individually, and once selected, press Ctrl + T to start transforming. Align them in any fashion you want, but do not overdo this effect if you don’t want to end up with a messed up canvas..
