Today we are going to make a tutorial on frosty text effect. While it’s still cold and wintry outside, I thought it would be high time to supply some more wintry text effects for our readers.

So, begin with making a new canvas of any desired size, and for now please use plain white (#ffffff) background. Later on we will add a custom texture or picture to the background, but for now, it will be much easier for your to work and see all the effects against the white canvas.

Select the typing tool and using Arial Rounded MT Bold font, set to “sharp”, use very big letters, say over 100. For the purpose of the tutorial we used 115, however if you choose to download out PSD, you will see that our original canvas consists from letters with font size 195.

Type your word.

The main part of this Photoshop tutorial consists from precise application of the layer styles as we are going to work with custom designed curved, textures (default) and a lot of other features. Let’s begin and please try to follow us throughout the tutorial if you wish to achieve the same result.

Go to Layer >> Layer Styles, and start off with “Drop Shadow” options. Apply the settings as you see below. For the shadow here we used a very dark blue, almost black color: #003059. However, feel free to chose a different hue if you are going to work with a light background canvas afterward.

Switch the tab to Inner Shadow. For Inner shadow we used a gray-blue color #0a7eaf, which will nicely complement the overall wintry feel of this text. Please pay attention to the fact that we are using “Noise” here at 3%, to add to the grainy / snowy effect.

Switch to Outer Glow and apply a very dark outer glow effect, we used #0a1732 with 35% which gave us light yet dark outlined shade.

Working our way down (in Photoshop..), to Inner Glow settings. This one gives our text effect the feeling of light and reflection, yet this is not going to be a direct spotlight, rather a cold reflection as you are used to seeing when looking on ice. Also here please note that we have applied a 17%, very visible noise.

Add Bevel and Emboss settings for extremely curved effect.

As you could see, for the Shading we used a custom design curve, which we developed especially for this tutorial. Click on the Gloss Contour icon and try to replicate the mapping as you see below. This could be a little tricky, so if you are stuck, when you download our PSD this will come ready and you will only need to save this one to your custom curves for future usage.

Inside the Bevel and emboss settings, you have an option called “Texture”. Select one of the default, pre-installed patterns called “Weave 5″ and apply with Depth and Scale as you see below.

Please pay attention to the Depth here. The less you set it to, the less texture coming from the top you will see, so in our case, we use this Photoshop texture to create the illusion of fading snow and you can play around with setting it to even less than 4, to see how you cover just the top of it.

And now, Satin settings:

Gradient is going to be from dark hue of baby-blue shade #6ed3fe to lighter shade of blue #e4ffff

Now the last thing, we are going to add “Stroke”.

Colors: #000000 … #ffffff … #999999 … #cccccc …#000000

And here is what you got so far, if we zoom in a little:

Next step is, select the text layer, just press Ctrl + the layer in the layers preset.

Create a new layer on top of the text and press Ctrl + Shift + I to inverse the selection.

Fill the layer with one of the colors we used for our text:

Se the blending options of this layer to “Hue”. Now, at this point you are not really going to see any difference but what we want to do is add a nice wintry motif to the background, which will complete our frosty text atmosphere.

Take any image you like and paste it behind the text layer. Don’t worry if he hues of the image don’t meet the color scheme of your composition, because the blue layer with Hue overlay blending settings is going to equalize the images’ tones to match the text.

Here is your result (click the image to full view).

It’s been a long time since I came up with a truly original tutorial and this evening I finally had muse to make something that will stand out. I can already see how this tutorial is going to become a classic masterpiece once it gains popularity, so just sit back and read, don’t forget to bookmark this website and subscribe to our feed, to make sure you never miss any of our future tutorials and freebies.

Inspiration: Although today’s horror movies are all quite cheesy, very predictable and always disappointing, I drew my inspiration from one of the infamous and unpopular movies – “Long Distance“, starring the beautiful Monica Keena. Don’t be surprised if it does not ring a bell, I’d be surprised if it did. I myself however love the cover / poster of this movie, the original plot and I decided to make my own little scenery with my own little plot, which is more or less reflected in the film’s poster.

So, let’s get started. The canvas size is really your choice, you may want to make it slightly longer or even bigger, because we initially work wit ha small image here.

Paint your canvas in dark color, we used #211f1f.

Take one of the grungy backgrounds you like to use, make sure it’s pale enough and not too dark. We used a great image from here.

You don’t need to use a stained old paper, like I used here. You can also use bricks surface, old wood or any other old-looking texture because this is not going to be your leitmotif, we just need something to be on the background.

Now, once you have downloaded the texture you want to use, let’s move to the next step.

Paste the background you downloaded unto the dark canvas you are working with. You will need to either resize or de-size it. I didn’t bother downloading the full version of this background, so I just took the small image and stretched it across the canvas, because in this case, we don’t mind to lose a bit of quality.

Once pasted and resized, set the lending options of the background to “Overlay“. You should have it looking like this..

Once this background has been blended, let’s add some more horror – grunge effects. If the hue of your canvas turns to be different — don’t worry, eventually we will overwrite it all with black and white so the colors are irrelevant at the moment.

Next, we took this nice finger prints image, called “Tint black 2″. Again, paste it onto your canvas, resize, position slightly above the middle…

Set the blending options to “Darker Color” and Opacity to 80%.

This is more or less how it should look.

Next thing we need is a model for our main character in the movie. Here I really can’t advice you, feel free to use any photo you really like, if you want — use your own and then print it up as a poster, this could be a great idea for your bedroom! So… Choose a picture of a girl. We wanted to go with a dramatic look so we chose a fantastic photo taken by Zsolt Dreher of a woman under the rain. You can download it here.

Open the file in your Adobe Photoshop. This file was too dark, so we needed to correct shadows, otherwise in our final (dark) result we won’t be able to see her face.

Go to Image >> Adjustments >> Shadow / Highlight. Apply the following (automatic) settings…

Press OK.

Now, go to Image >> Adjustments >> Gradient Map. Chose gradient between white and black, this should be default. If you are getting a “negative” image (with revered colors), just click the “reverse” box. You will get a classic black and white photo with good contrast, thanks to the Shadow/highlight correction we did in the previous step.

We want it all to blend in nicely, so we place the girl’s photo over all the layer we have so far and set the blending option to “Overlay“.

Don’t worry if you get a messy mix of images because we will fix that too later. Most important is that main character image (woman, in our case) would be visible and not too dark.

To avoid the previous layer with fingerprints obscuring our character, use Eraser tool with soft brush to remove any finger prints from her face and body.

We want to still add more to our poster design, because it’s a movie poster, it has to have a CONCEPT. And, it has to reflect and represent that spooky and mysterious concept. So I looked up a nice and heavy photo of a road, taken by Romanian photographer Pniti Marta, and decided to blend to fold it into our composition.

Take the road’s picture, and place it over grungy canvas, yet below the woman’s face and fingerprints layers. Set the blending options to “Luminosity” just like you see on the picture below..

So far, this should be your result. Bear in mind that if you are working with different images and not the ones we used for this Photoshop tutorial, your result may be different, darker or lighter, with better or worst contrast. Try to keep following the tutorial and see if it gets better when we will be adding more layers.

Next, we need a dramatic, classic horror element and I couldn’t think of a better stock photo to use than Silhouette by Cathy Kaplan. I took her image and since once again I didn’t want to wait for the big image to download, I used the small one and stretched it to match the size of the canvas, which also gave me slightly pixelated blurred effect I wanted to achieve.

Paste the small image (or large) on top of your digital canvas, press Ctrl + T, and while holding the SHIFT key pressed, to avoid losing proportion.

Set Silhouette’s opacity to 80%.

Drag the silhouette layer under the girl and finger prints layer, yet keep it above the road photo layer. The picture below should reflect your result so far. If you lost track with layer sequences and as a result your poster is turning out to be rather different, here is our layers order so far, from bottom to top:

Dark (#211f1f) color layer >> Grunge paper >> Road >> Shadow Silhouette >> Finger Prints >> Girl in the Rain

Next, when we have a great black and white background (it turned black and white when we placed a colorless silhouette’s layer over it), time to add the spicy little details and title. Let’s start with a cliche that any horror movie will have in it, and most of them are going to have it on the poster as well — knife covered with blood! (yep, we finally got to the chop-chop part!) Chose any weapon you like, we went with a classic kitchen knife I fished out of SXC.hu as well. Crop the white background (in my case I just erased the bg with one click using the Magic Eraser Tool, then Selected the remaining part (knife itself, select it by holding the CTRL key and pressing on the layer, in your layer palette), then I went to Select >> Modify >> Contract and set it to 1 px. Afterwords I pressed Shift + CTRL + I to inverse the selection and pressed delete. Voila, the knife is neatly cropped.

Place the knife somewhere at the bottom of the canvas to make sure it does not obscure any of our carefully selected characters.

Time to add a spine-chilling title. Since our poster is rather busy, I made a new layer, and using a black color with soft brush, I added a small black cloud at the bottom, where I plan to place my title.

To decorate it a little bit more, I also took one of the shapes I have in my computer and added it on top of the black cloud to give our poster a more of a Gothic look.

I also took one more shape, of a slightly lighter hue and placed it above the black cloud layer. Now this gives the poster a more of a devilish mood.

Finally, the most important part – the title. We made use of Birch Std font to write “Laura’s”, in white, 109pt letters; and placed the name over the black stain we previously made at the lower part of the canvas.

Apply these Gradient settings, by going to Layer >> Layer Style >> Gradient Overlay.. You may also add a shadow like we did but only if you have a dark overall feel on the canvas, otherwise the shadow will spoil the mysterious look.

The second word in our title is written in handwriting, which is more typical to horror movies and suggest a psychopath actually wrote it himself, with blood. We decided to go with an optimistically named font — “Chiller” (costs 29,00 USD to download). Also, just chose a red / scarlet hue of your choice and apply a light gradient, to give the font more depth.

That’s all, really. Hope you enjoyed the tutorial and it will help you to create something beautiful for yourself, your family or friends.

Photos and article written by our guest poster Prajneet Singh.

The amount of detail that can be found in nature, no human creation can ever match. The beauty, the freshness, the colors of nature, it is all just so amazing; no wonder so many people take up nature photography as a hobby or maybe even a profession.

But with the kind of flora and fauna out there, you are left with a wide variety of subjects to choose from: beautiful landscapes and seascapes, to little flowers and insects, to big cats, to creatures of the air – birds. Bird watching has always been a popular hobby with nature lovers, and with the advent of digital photography, bird photography has turned into a sort of extension of birding. But the fact remains that like other wildlife, birds are a very difficult subject to photograph because: they are hard to spot, harder to get close to, and you have virtually no control over them. In this tutorial I will provide some basic tips for people getting into bird photography and hopefully try and make their birding experience more enjoyable.

Know your subject; Observe; Plan

I personally prefer to emphasize the bird aspect before the photography one because my experience tells me that the better you know your subject, the better your pictures, even if your equipment isn’t as fancy. Whatever birds you wish to shoot, spend some time reading about them, and studying them in the field if possible. This gives you a fairly good idea of where you can find them, how they react to human presence, and the like. Also, if you have a nature park or a zoo, go there for a walk. That will refresh your mind as well as give you an opportunity to know the birds around you. This done, you should plan your shoot according to the time of the day (and the year) when you’ll get a chance to capture the majestic creatures in all their glory.

The Equipment

Lets face it, getting within arm’s reach of ANY bird is close to impossible unless the bird belongs to a very friendly species or is a pet. So to get good pictures of birds, you need a lens that offers you a good zoom range. A 300mm or better would be ideal, but try and get at least a 200mm lens. Also, if you wish to capture birds in flight/taking off/landing, a fast lens with a wide aperture (f/4 or lower) would really help. A tripod is very essential here because you’ll be zooming in towards your subject which highly amplifies camera shake. If you have a camera/lens with Image Stabilization, that’s even better.

Approach Your Subject

Once you have the equipment in hand, and the subject in sight, you need to get close. As a rule of thumb, for any kind of photography, try and get as close to your subject as possible. Problem: You move towards a bird, it flies away. Solution: Be very slow, very cautious, and very patient. If you see the slightest hint of the bird moving away because of your presence, stop right there and let it get used to you. Make absolutely no sudden movements when near a bird. There have been times when after a lot of effort, I got pretty close to a bird and the bird flew off, not because of my being so close but because of the sudden movement of my camera strap falling down from my arm! So make sure that nothing is hanging loose. If the bird still seems uncomfortable, leave. Come back later. Always remember: the bird is more important than the photograph. The same goes for its habitat as well. Disturbing the creature or its environment to take a picture defeats the whole purpose of bird photography. The challenge lies in capturing the bird in its natural environment, and its own character.

To photograph a bird, you need to be like a bird. Birds react very quickly to any movements around them. So, when you’re in range, you need to be ready with your camera and react very quickly lest you should miss your shot. This is where a high speed dSLR with a fast lens will help. So, move slowly, and react quickly.

Aim for the Eye

A picture that is brilliantly framed, with a great subject and wonderful colors, but low sharpness is of no value. On the other hand, a photo that is nothing great in terms of subject, but has decent framing and is sharp, is much better. The key to a good picture is sharpness. When taking pictures of wildlife, especially birds, try and get the eye as sharp as possible, even if you end up getting the feathers slightly less sharp. This is because whenever you look at a photo of an animal, bird or even a person, your attention is automatically directed to the eyes as they display a lot of emotion.

To get the sharpness that you need, try and use a smaller aperture (a higher f number). Most lenses offer sharpest pictures in the range of f/8 – f/11. Also, since you’ll often be shooting in the middle of lots of trees and leaves, use manual focus wherever possible because the camera will find it hard to focus in these conditions. Also, if your camera has RAW support, use it. This way you’ll be able to get more detail in your picture, and make adjustments to white balance and exposure later during post processing.

Capture the Moment

When observing animals and birds, there come moments when you stand there looking, spellbound. The courtship displays of birds of paradise, the mating of Albatross, a Swift feeding its young in mid-air. These are once in a lifetime moments – endeavor to capture them. Of course there are other stunning shots that are easier to capture, like an eagle swooping down on its prey, a hummingbird hovering in mid-air to savor the sweet nectar of a flower. These are moments that make priceless pictures, and these are moments you should try your best to capture.

A couple of other things you should keep in mind when clicking birds are:

Don’t try too hard to approach nests when there are eggs/young. There is a chance that the bird might abandon the nest.

When capturing birds in flight, use high shutterspeeds and boost your ISO if needed. Try to take shots from above or eye level.

Where the background is distracting, use a wider aperture to blur the background. This particularly lends a nice feel if there are leaves/grass in the background, giving it a soft green look.

Know your camera well, so that you know what settings to use where.

That is it for this tutorial. This should give you a jump start with bird photography. Remember, you will not get instant results. So be patient, keep practicing, and eventually you’ll get there!

This tutorial moved permanently from loreleiweb.com due to technical reasons. Ok, so this is going to be an ultra simple tutorial for making this image. It can add a lot of sexy and elegant yet creepy effect to any of your family photos, so since it’s a quick and easy tut I sincerely recommend you to try it out.

We used a picture of Amy Lee, so for a start you need to get some photo to work with, though don’t forget that you need someone with light eyes, it wont work good enough on brown / black eyes.. discrimination, I know.

You can take the picture of Amy Lee that we used as her eyes are really bright.

Duplicate the layer.

Select the upper layer, and go to Hues / Saturation and reduce the colors of the upper layer fully.

Select the eraser tool, very small with sharp edge, we used 5px but u may want to work with even smaller size.

erase the upper (black n’ white) layer from the inside of the eye. Don’t touch the white area of the eye.

so u will get something like this…

Now to the interesting part.

Select the upper (colourless) layer again, and go to Brightness / Contrast.

The idea is to reduce both Contrast and Brightness dramatically, so that the face won’t be anything but a background anymore.

you will get something like this (feel free to play with the settings, depending on a photo, maybe you will need less or more of brightness or contrast)

For the final touch, select again the layer below (colored) and go to Hue / Saturation. We will add a bit contrast, so that the eyes won’t be that “pale” anymore, and will blend in better…

That’s it. Hope u liked this small tut.

This tutorial will teach you how to make your very own fragrance advertisements, and even though we chose to use Monica Beluci in this tutorial, you can turn any ordinary home-made picture into a fragrance advertisement billboard. So first of all you need a picture of a girl (or boy you are doing to use. Pictures of people against black or dark backgrounds are better, since we will try to create an illusion of nocturnal sky.

Once you opened a new canvas with the desired dimensions of your billboard, create a new layer and fill it with any dark blue or dark purple hue, we used #210a3a. Make sure that your ‘background’ colour is set to white, and go to Filter >> Render >> Clouds. This will will your upper layer with nice foggy fibber texture. Set the overlay settings of this clouds layer to “Linear Light” (see illustration).

Our aim is to create a nicely high contrasted photo with a pit of fog and glow effect as well as make the background look like a night sky. SO, what we are going to do it, duplicate the photo of the girl, drag it (in the layer’s panel) on top of other 2 layers, and set this layer’s settings to “Overlay”

Next step is filling the bottom of the billboard with grass. This is the easiest part although I noticed that many get stuck here. We will be using the brush tool, with a default Photoshop CS2 brush called “brush dune”. You should have it. Set your foreground color to green (any hue, up to you, as long as it gives a natural look) and fill the bottom of the screen more or less like you see on the picture. The default settings for this brush are set to “scattering” so you don’t need to do much work except for just not overdoing the grass over the photo.

Next step is adding twirly shape.

If you don’t have any nice and twirly shape, you can download mine in PSD format HERE.

So you will either select a custom shape tool and draw any twirly shape of your choice, or take mine from the PSD file, drag and drop it to your canvas. Place the shame Between the girl’s layer and the grass (see below). Next, duplicate the shape later, transform it horizontally (or vertically, depending on your shape) and place it more or less as you can see on the illustration below.

The idea is, to make the shape look as it’s behind the lady, so rasterize the upper shape’s layer and choose the Eraser Tool. Carefully remove the shape from the girl’s body. I’d suggest to use an eraser tool with hard edge, however if you want to nicely blend it with the fog effect on the background and not to make the edge too sharp, I suggest to use a 20px soft edge eraser tool.

Next step is adding glow. Make sure the upper shape is selected in your layers panel and go to Layer >> Layer styles >> Outer Glow. Apply the following glow settings using the white color. Repeat the same action for the first shape as well.

And this is what you got so far… You may also apply a few chaotic white dots, using the bruh tool and add glow, this will imitate stars on the background. This is optional, if you feel your background is too dull.

If you are making a fragrance billboard you will need a perfume bottle, but again this could be replaced with any other product you are going to “sell”. We went with this fragrance bottle from sxc.hu. Most important is to crop it properly and then find a good location for it on your billboard.

Once you have located it, it could be a good idea to add a little transparency to the glass so that you’d see the grass from underneath it. We just duplicated the layer and set one of them on “overlay”, the other on “soft” so we can see the grass through yet the bottle does not become semi-visible.

After this, make a new layer on top of all the others, select the brush tool again, using the “dune grass” brush shape, and add a bit more grass over the perfume bottle itself, to create the illusion as it sits “inside” the grass field. That’s it. Add text and your Fragrance Commercial is ready to go up on New Yorks’ streets!

Okay, as you could guess, we are going to make a cool, snowy and even arctic photo effect. This is not going to require any advanced skills even though the result looks complicated and professional. All you need to do is follow this tutorial step by step and in the end you will get the same, or even better result as we have here in our presentation.

Start off by selecting a photo of a girl or boy you are willing to freeze. You can use your own or a stock photo, our image comes from sxc.hu so if you like, use this one as well.

We are going to work a lot with duplicated layers so please pay attention when I say you should duplicate your existing layer. So… Please duplicate the layer. Select the upper one and go to Image >> Adjustments >> Gradient Map. Use one of the default gradients (dark blue to white), and if it makes your image look like a negative, check the “Reverse” box. Otherwise just click OK.

While your blueish layer is selected, go to layers panel and set its setting to “Color”, then reduce the Opacity of the layer to about 73%. If you see that your image is too dark or too blue, you can reduce the opacity even more, BUT… at your own risk, okay?

Now, what characterizes a cold face in snow? Pale lips, eyebrows covered in snow… we are doing to achieve this effect extremely easy. In your layers panel select the first layer (the colorful one) and using the “Dodge Tool” with soft 40px brush, go over the lips area and then carefully over the eyebrows to make them significantly paler. Surprisingly when you will be going over the eyebrows, it will give you an effect of them being gently and naturally covered with snow. I recommend to go over the eyebrows with your dodge tool only once, while it’s Range set to “midtones” and Exposure to “26%”. The trick is to make it look natural and to avoid having white lives over the face. If you did it right, you should get something like this so far:

Next step. Press “D” to set your foreground and background colors to black and white. Make a new layer on top of the other two and fill it with black. Go to Filter >> Render >> Clouds and apply the clouds effect. Set this layer’s opacity to about 50% and if you see that the result is not exactly as you see below (this could depend on your clouds layer or the lightness / darkness of your photo), try playing with settings, Overlay or Soft Color might work.

Duplicate your clouds layer.

Go to Filter >> Noise >> Add Noise, and add noise as set below.

Now go to Filter >> Blur >> Motion Blur, and add this motion blur. This is similar to fake rain effect, only we will add little distance to the blur to create the illusion of snowflakes, rather than rain scan lines.

At this point, flatten the layer.

Now that your entire canvas consist from only one layer, go to Image >> Adjustments >> Levels… and apply these settings. We want to add a little contrast to the dark hue of the picture…

…and a bit of blue/green hue to highlight the coldness.

That’s it! Here is your image. In a few simulate steps we took this girl from an autumn atmosphere to the Northern Pole.

This is it, here is your final result before and after, hope you enjoyed the tutorial!

This tutorial will teach you how to make a text that looks as if it is located behind a broken glass, which gives a little bit 3D feel to the image.

It’s important to emphasize that this effect will only look good when we combine light text against dark background, otherwise, you will not be age to achieve a good result.

So.. make a new canvas of any size you want. We used the #181729 color for our background, but this is of course depends on your design. Arial narrow is our font here, however this is again up to your preference. Remember not to choose fonts with excessive curves because this may prevent us from achieving a nice result.

Select the typing tool and using the white color, type any word. Go to Layer >> Layer Styles >> Options and apply the following settings (by the way, the images are stored on my hosting, only different domain since I first thought pf publishing it on another blog. )

Bevel and emboss

Gradient #b2b3b7 … >> … #fcfafb

Stroke Settings

You got a nice and smooth gradient effect, and now duplicate the layer, make sure your duplicated text layer has the same Style settings, this will save you work now. Go to layer styles of your second text layer, and choose the Gradient tab. Change the gradient settings to black … white … black. I suggest to drag the white paint bucket a bit closer to the right side (so that the lightest spot won’t be in the middle, but somewhere at 3/4 towards the top. This is just my personal preference and of course you may choose to keep the white bucket right in the middle. I won’t object, really.

So far, you should achieve this result, and remember, underneath this you have a layer with lighest gradient settings.

Now comes a more complicated part, if it won’t work right from the first try, don’t worry, just try a several times until you will be satisfied with the result. Rasterize the upper text layer Using the Lasso Tool, load a chaotic selection that will segment out the upper part of the text. Make sure you don’t cut out too much. Once you like the way your selection looks, press “Del” on your keyboard to delete everything inside the selection. Do the same with the lower part of the text, and be sure, when you press “delete” that the rasterized upper text layer is selected and not the background or the layer underneath it.

On the left you can see an example of what you are supposed to achieve so far.the selection might look a bit dodgy but this is fine, since we are going to achieve a cracked grass effect on top of it. Now, I recommend to zoom on your picture so that it will be much easier for you to work with selections when you can see hem better on your screen. You are going to repeat your previous path, only this time you will select all the remaining area around the text. Using the lasso tool, start from the side of the canvas and when you approach the letters, try to repeat as precise as possible the previous selection path.

You will not be able to follow it exactly, but this is why we want a NEW selection and not just invert the previous one. We don’t want it to look too sleek and polished, it has to have a bit of a cracked charm.

Important: When you selection is ready, make a new layer and drag it in your layers panel so that it will end up being under both text layers. This is very important and not locating the layer in it’s proper position will prevent you from achieving the right result.

Now, select a Brush Tool with master diameter of about 100px and, most important, soft edge. Very gently try to make a “haze” that raises from under the lower edge of the selection. I recommend starting way under your selection and go up bit by bit when you see you want to get more glow.

Repeat the same process with the lower part of the text, loading a selection, more or less following the previous path and then using either a new or the previous glass layer, adding a little white glow. That’s it, this is your result and I hope you like it!
